About the event

Do you love activities? Want to take a deep dive into the natural wonders of your own backyard?

Join our FREE Engaging in Science event! On Saturday the 4th May from 2:00pm, Friends of Parks Queensland is hosting an afternoon of walks, talks, citizen science, and networking. Held at Vernon Conservation Park on Butchulla Country, just west of Hervey Bay, this event will highlight the biocultural values of the landscape and shed light on research methods used in koala conservation. You’ll be actively encouraged to participate in citizen science and learn about cutting-edge technologies for locating koalas, including scent detection dogs and drones.

Where? Vernon Conservation Park

When? Saturday 4th of May from 2pm - 6pm, optional spotlighting from 6:30pm

You can expect:

  • Welcome to Country from the Butchulla
  • Introduction to Friends of Vernon Conservation Park
  • Cultural walk with the Butchella
  • Botanical and insect walk with Friends of Vernon CP
  • Koala detection dog presentation with University of the Sunshine Coast
  • Drone demonstration from Friends of Parks Queensland
  • Training in methods used for nocturnal animal monitoring
  • Optional spotlighting after dark.
  • Afternoon tea and dinner provided.

Who is this event for?

  • Anyone wanting to learn & explore the biocultural values of the landscape
  • Those who want to network with researchers and conservationists
  • We recommend ages 16+
  • A moderate level of physical fitness is recommended

What to bring:

  • Enclosed footwear is a must
  • Long pants
  • Insect repellent
  • A hat and sunscreen
  • Water bottle and backpack for the walks
  • A mobile phone with the iNaturalist app installed
  • A torch if you are joining us for spotlighting

Refreshments are provided. This event is free, however places are limited. Please reserve your spot by booking through HumanTix. 

Registered attendees will receive the runsheet and meeting point via email.
